| Mother And Son Jailed For 40 Years For Possession Of Government Loots |
The COURT of Itilima District in Simiyu region, in its first case to give judgment since it was launched on November 25, 2022 by the Chief Justice of Tanzania Prof. Ibrahimu Juma, has sentenced two people, a mother and her son, to serve 20 years imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty in the economic sabotage case they were facing. The first case of economic sabotage was registered and sentenced in the court, but it was also conducted in a short time of one hour and the sentence was given after the defendants were brought to court for the first time and confessed to the crime. Kija Matu (60) and Mayunga Juma (30) were the ones who faced the punishment after confessing to the crime of being found with government spoils which are eight (8) pieces of dried mule animal illegally with a value of Sh. 1,517,100 million. In case number one (1) of the year 2022 of economic sabotage, before the sentence the defendants were read their charges by the Prosecutor Assistant Police Inspector from the prosecution office, Jaston Haule. Jaston explained to the court that both defendants on December 5, 2022 around 4:00 p.m. in Laini Village 'B' in Itilima District, Simiyu Region, were arrested and searched where they were found with the 8 dry pieces of mule. After the charges were read, both defendants pleaded guilty and the Mfawidhi Resident Magistrate, Robert Kaanmwa, who was hearing the case, sentenced each of them to prison for 20 years. The punishment has been given as a lesson to other people who intend to commit such a crime.
