Tengule Bridge was the liberator of sugar production

Tengule Bridge became the liberator of sugar production.

The GOVERNMENT has said that the completion of the construction of 18-kilometer connecting roads and the 140-meter Kitengule Bridge has reduced the distance and cycle of transporting sugar raw materials from 140 kilometers to 14 kilometers from the farm to the factory. This was said in the Kagera region by the Deputy Minister of Construction, Engineer Godfrey Kasekenya, while inspecting the construction of the road that passes through the Kagera Sugar Factory in the region. "The big cry here was the challenge of the infrastructure from the farm to the factory, my hope is that once this infrastructure is completed even the price of sugar can drop because the production costs will also decrease in one way or another", said Kasekenya. In addition, he has called on the people of Karagwe District to take advantage of the opportunity to grow sugar because they will sell it at a good price and increase their income and get other commercial opportunities. In another step, Kasekenya has noted that the contractor has already started the construction of the Bugene - Kasulo/Benako road (60 km), at the asphalt level to connect the Kagera region with the neighboring countries of Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. On his part, Consulting Engineer Lucas Nyaki, has explained to the Deputy Minister that the project was completed in September, 2022 and the remaining works are to paint the steel of the bridge, put up road signs as well as environmental works such as planting trees, planting grass and excavation of ditches. Nyaki has explained that now the project will be under the supervision of the contractor for a period of three years. He said that the project has cost approximately 31 billion shillings of which 26.548 billion shillings have been provided by the Central Government and the Kagera Factory has contributed 5 billion shillings. And the representative of the Kagera Sugar Factory, Vicent Mtaki, has thanked the Government for completing the infrastructure and now the transportation costs have decreased, but also the presence of the road attracts employees because they are guaranteed to reach the factory faster and more safely. "This road and bridge is a savior for us because approximately 1,600,000 sugar canes are going to be easily transported in this infrastructure quickly and reliably", emphasized Mtaki. The Kitengule Bridge connects the Kyaka-Bugene-Benako highway with the Kagera Sugar Junction-Kakunyu road, in Misenyi, Karagwe and Ngara Districts in Kagera Region.
