The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, witnessing the start of water filling at the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam (JNHPP) located in Rufiji, Coast Region today, December 22, 2022 President Samia has closed the gate today December 22, 2022 before delivering his speech at the ceremony to start filling the dam in Rufiji, Coast Region. Previously, the Minister of Energy, Januari Makamba, said that in order for the embankment to be built, the area must be dry and there should be no river flowing through it, so they built a tunnel to divert the river to make the construction successful. "The tunnel was completed in 2019, the Rufiji river was passing through the tunnel and the construction of the embankment started and today we have reached the stage of completion of this embankment to the level of being able to fill with water and since there is rain we thought it was the right time for the life of the project to close the tunnel so that let this river return to its path," said Makamba. He has said that the water will continue to pass and benefit the residents of the surrounding areas at the level assessed in terms of the environment. "We are closing the tunnel that will enable the Rufiji river to return to its original path, this 19-meter tunnel, we have made a gate that we will close today weighing 368 tons and after the gate is closed, it will take about 30 minutes for the water to start filling here," Minister Makamba said.
