The United States Strongly Accuses Afghanistan of Denying Education to Women

Afghan female students line up to take an exam at Kabul University.

The US State Department has strongly condemned the leadership of the Taliban after the Afghan government banned women from studying in private and public universities in Afghanistan. It is the latest decree to extinguish women's rights and freedom and the action starts immediately. The decision was announced after a meeting with the Taliban government. Despite earlier promises that they would have moderate principles and respect women's rights and the rights of minorities, the Taliban have largely implemented their strict interpretation of Islamic law. They have banned girls from going to school from middle to high school, and imposed conditions on women starting from employment and ordered them to cover themselves from the little toe to the head in public. Women are also banned from going to parks and gyms. The letter issued by the spokesperson of the ministry of higher education, Ziaullah Hashmi, said that private and public universities should implement the ban as soon as possible and inform his ministry once the ban is implemented.
